Imagine a world where every tree is a symbol of hope, where each
one contributes to the well-being of our planet. We often hear the phrase,
"Plant a tree, save the planet," but what if the very
tree we thought would save us ends up causing more harm than good? This brings
us to the majestic Eucalyptus, a native of Australia that made its way to Kenya
in 1902. Initially introduced with good intentions to provide fuelwood for the
Kenya-Uganda railway, this exotic tree is estimated to cover
nearly 500,000 acres (probably the most popular tree in Kenya) and has had unintended
consequences on the delicate ecological balance.
As we reflect on the story of the Eucalyptus, we can draw parallels to our own lives. How often do we find ourselves taking advantage of others unfairly? Do we use our positions or authority to belittle and slander those around us? “Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another…” James 4:11 (NIV). It's essential to pause and evaluate our actions, ensuring that we contribute positively to the lives of those we encounter. Furthermore, Luke 6:31 (NIV) reminds us, “Do to others as you would have them do to you”.
